About the Book

Aquatic ecosystem and aquatic plant diversity holds a key position in maintaining the floristic diversity of India - one of the 12 megabiodiversity centres of the world. It provides the material basis for the sustenance of thousands of floral and faunal aquatic life forms. This Book ``Wetland Phytodiversity : A Complete Guide to Indian Helobieae' deals with 75 plant species belonging to the aquatic families of angiosperms under the group Helobieae. Distribution of the taxa, their life forms, floral as well as pollination biology, phenology, chromosome numbers, etc. have been dealt with proper care towards better understanding of the affinities, intra - and interfamilial relationships of the taxa. Chapters on phytogeography, pollen morphology, fossil records etc. will be very much helpful for future workers in tracing origin and segregation of this important aquatic group of angiosperms. Apart from the text 20 maps/figures, 66 illustrations, 24 plates have been provided in the book.

About the Author

Dr. M.S. Mondal obtained his M.Sc. in Botany from the University of Kalyani, West Bengal securing first class second position with specialization in Paleobotany & Palynology and awarded Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta in Palynotaxonomy. Dr. Mondal is currently serving in the Botanical Survey of India as Joint Director (Hqrs.). He has contributed about 80 research publications in Indian & Foreign journals and chapters in Books. Dr. Mondal has guided six Ph.D. students and authored two books - “Pollen morphology & systematic relationship of the families Sabiaceae & Connaraceae” and “Pollen morphology & systematic relationship of the family Polygonaceae”. He is now actively engated in the Palynotaxonomic research on plant families with reference to phylogeny.

Dr. (Miss) Ratna Guha obtained her M.Sc. (Botany) from Ranchi University, securing first class first position with specialization in Cytogenetics. Dr. (Miss) Guha started her research career as Junior Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow in the Botanical Survey of India and is presently engaged as Research Associate in the ENVIS centre, Botanical Survey of India. She was awarded Ph.D. degree on the dissertation “Taxonomy and Pollen Morphology of Indian Helobieae with special reference to Phylogeny” under supervision of Dr. M.S. Mondal, Joint Director, Botanical Survey of India. Dr. (Miss) Guha has a number of publications to her credit dealing with taxonomy of angiosperms, palynotaxonomy, floral biology, conservation, etc. She is now actively engaged with status and assessment of plant species of India included in CITES.
